March 2-31: Five-part Healthy Brain Series Examines Optimum Aging

WATERBURY – Strategies and information on maintaining a healthy brain is the focus of a free five-part series presented by Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging and Western Connecticut Area Agency on Aging. The Healthy Brain Series will be held Tuesdays, March 3 through 31, 2-3 pm, at Western Connecticut Area Agency on Aging, 84 Progress Lane.

The presenter will be Patty O’Brian, certified dementia specialist, with Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging. Topics will include: Challenge Your Mind Daily – Activities To Keep Your Mind Sharp; Feeding the Brain – The Importance of Diet and Hydration; Benefits of a Purposeful Life: Finding Meaningful Engagement as You Age; Good Sleep and Brain Power; and The Blue Zones – Lessons for Living Longer from the people who’ve lived the longest. Participants are encouraged to attend all sessions.

March 3: Redefining the Purpose of Life Throughout the Aging Process

SOUTH WINDSOR – Growing older changes not only the physical self but can impact a person’s outlook on life, wisdom and sometimes, his or her reason for being. The free program, “Growing Older Can Bring New Purpose,” will be held Tuesday, March 3, at 1 pm, at South Windsor Senior Center, 150 Nevers Road. Presenter will be Kaitlyn McKenzie, exercise physiologist, with GoodLife Fitness, the program sponsor.

March 3 (monthly): Chase Family Movement Disorders Center Offers Caregivers Support Group

VERNON – The Chase Family Movement Disorders Center is offering a caregivers support group for individuals who care for people with movement disorders and other neurodegenerative conditions. This free support group is offered on the first Tuesday of every month (March 3), 10:30 am-noon, at the Hartford Hospital Family Health Center, 35 Talcottville Road, in the Chase Family Community Wellness and Education Room. Topics include: communication techniques, caregiver support, benefits of activities, family dynamics, disease stage, safety issues and concerns. March 3 (monthly): Hartford HealthCare’s Veterans’ ‘Coffee Talk’ Offers Support and Resources

WILLIMANTIC – Veterans from all branches of service are welcome to join a free “coffee talk” on the first Tuesday of every month (March 3), 8:30-9:30 am, at Windham Hospital, 112 Mansfield Ave. The meeting is now being held in the 4 West Classroom, which can be accessed from the lobby elevator, up one floor, left off the elevator and at the end of the hall. Facilitator is Sherri Vogt, Hartford HealthCare veterans liaison. Hartford HealthCare at Home is sponsoring. Light refreshments will be served.

March 3 (monthly): Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging hosts dementia support group in West Hartford

WEST HARTFORD – Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging is presenting a free dementia support group on the first Tuesday of every month (March 3), 10-11 am, at the West Hartford Senior Center, 15 Starkel Road.

Those who care for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia will be able to learn useful skills while voicing their concerns. Topics include communication techniques, caregiver support, safety issues, benefits of activities and daily routine, family dynamics, stages of the disease process, behavior management and more. March 4 (monthly): Free blood pressure screenings set at Wethersfield Senior Center

WETHERSFIELD – Free blood pressure screenings are held on the first Wednesday of the month (March 4), 11 am-noon, at the Wethersfield Senior Center (Pitkin Community Center), 30 Greenfield St. Cedar Mountain Commons and Jefferson House sponsor the screenings.

March 4: Managing Arthritis’ Program Includes Management and Movement Tips

NEW HARTFORD – With more than 100 different types of arthritis, thousands of people experience its aches, pains and impact on mobility. The free program, “Managing Arthritis,” will be held Wednesday, March 4, 11:30 am, at New Hartford Senior Center, 530 Main St., third floor. Topics will include managing symptoms to provide pain relief, improving movement and strategies for performing daily activities. Hartford HealthCare at Home Hospice Care is offering two free monthly bereavement support groups at four locations in March:

March 4 (monthly): Center for Healthy Aging Offers Dementia Caregivers Support Group in Norwich

NORWICH – Caring for a loved one with dementia is not easy. A caregivers support group can provide emotional, educational and social support. Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging offers a free caregivers support group on the first Wednesday of the month (March 4), 9:30 to 11 am, at Backus Outpatient Care Center, 111 Salem Turnpike.

Facilitator will be Adrianne DeVivo, certified dementia specialist, of Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging, the program sponsor. Dementia Support Group Meets Monthly in Torrington

TORRINGTON – Caring for someone with dementia can be challenging requiring responsibility for financial decisions, daily tasks, hygiene and managing changes in behavior among many other duties. A support group provides emotional, educational and social support as well as interaction with other caregivers. Facilitators discuss communication techniques, caregiver support, benefits of activities, stages of the disease, family dynamics and safety issues.

March 5: Understanding the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period

TORRINGTON – Charlotte Hungerford Hospital is partnering with Hartford HealthCare Senior Services to sponsor a free educational program to help individuals understand the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period. “Understanding the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period” will be held Thursday, March 5, 2-3 pm, in Charlotte Hungerford Hospital’s Memorial Building Conference Hall, 540 Litchfield St.

Marissa Hiebel, a Medicare Educator for Hartford HealthCare, will cover topics such as things to consider when choosing a Medicare Advantage plan and other times throughout the year when it may be possible to make a Medicare plan change. Caregivers and family members are also encouraged to attend.

March 10 (monthly): Respite Care Available at Mulberry Gardens Support Group

PLANTSVILLE – Living with Alzheimer’s disease or a related memory disorder can be challenging and feel overwhelming for families and caregivers. Hartford HealthCare’s Mulberry Gardens of Southington offers a free support group for families and caregivers on the second Tuesday of every month (March 10), 10:30-11:30 am. Facilitators Jenn Doty, BSW, social worker, and Ingrid Kausyla RN, BSN, director of wellness, provide suggestions, community support and a safe environment to listen or share thoughts and feelings. Mulberry Gardens is at 58 Mulberry St. in the Plantsville section of Southington.

NEW BRITAIN – Arbor Rose at Jerome Home offers a free dementia caregivers support group on the second Tuesday of each month (March 10), 5:30-7 pm, at 975 Corbin Ave. Topics may include communication techniques; medical, legal and behavioral issues; caregiver support; and financial problems. Facilitators listen, guide the conversation and provide information about community resources in a confidential setting. MERIDEN – To live a full and healthiest life, knowing about healthy foods and a balanced diet can be key especially when considering weight loss. As people age, nutritional needs change thus it may be necessary to modify and vary what they eat. BRISTOL – Avoiding slips and falls isn’t always easy – sometimes they are inevitable. However, there are a few basic strategies to prevent falls and reduce injury if a fall occurs. March 11: Dementia Support Group Meets Monthly at Southington Care Center

SOUTHINGTON – Caring for a loved one can be daunting, presenting a maze of problems to solve including helping a loved one with daily tasks, communicating effectively, making financial decisions, managing changes in behavior, and more. Southington Care Center, 45 Meriden Ave., offers a free Alzheimer’s and dementia support group on the second Wednesday of the month (March 11), 6:30-7:30 pm, in the Anna Fanelli Room.

This group is an affiliated support group of the Alzheimer’s Association Connecticut Chapter, and is hosted by Southington Care Center and Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging. CROMWELL – Meditation, the practice of mental mindfulness and relaxation, can bring benefits to the mind, body and spirit. March 12: Free Memory Screenings

ASHFORD – Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging is conducting free, confidential memory screenings on Thursday, March 12 from 10 am-noon at Ashford Senior Center, 25 Tremko Lane. Adrianne DeVivo, dementia specialist, Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging, will conduct the evaluations which consist of questions and tasks to assess memory.

March 12: Lunch and Learn: Wound Care — What to Know

NEW BRITAIN – Wounds, which can be prevalent in diabetics, can lead to serious complications and compounded medical problems. The free Lunch and Learn program, “Wound Care – What to Know,” will be held Thursday, March 12, noon-1 pm, at Hospital of Central Connecticut – New Britain Campus, 100 Grand St., first floor Lecture Room. Presenter will be George Perdrizet, MD, PhD, medical director of Hartford HealthCare Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center. Marsch 16: Dry Needling for Tight Muscles

NEWINGTON – Trigger points are irritable, hard “knots” within a muscle that may cause pain over a large area, leading to difficulty performing everyday tasks. A treatment approach known as dry needling may release the tight muscle bands, leading to decreased pain and improved function. A free program about dry needling will be held Monday, March 16, 1 pm, at Newington Senior & Disabled Center, 120 Cedar St. Presenter will be Matthew Reynolds, physical therapist, Hartford Hospital Rehabilitation Network. March 16: Alzheimer’s Disease Caregivers Support Group

BERLIN – An Alzheimer’s disease caregivers support group can provide emotional, educational and social support for caregivers, family and friends. In response to the need, the Alzheimer’s Association Connecticut Chapter and Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging and Hartford HealthCare Memory Care Center are offering a new free support group on the third Monday of every month (March 16), 1-2:30 pm, at Berlin-Peck Memorial Library, 234 Kensington Ave.

March 17: Balance Screening for Better Stability

PLAINVILLE – Dizziness, health factors and even medication can all negatively impact balance especially as people age. Balance screenings can be the first step to indicate if there is a problem so that the cause can be diagnosed. Free balance screenings will be held on the third Tuesdays of the month (March 17), 10 am-noon, at Plainville Senior Center, 200 East St. Laurel Whalen, RPT/CLT, of Jerome Home Outpatient Rehabilitation, will conduct the balance screenings. PLAINVILLE – It seems like more businesses are popping up touting CBD to treat a variety of health problems. A free program, “CBD and Pain Management,” will be held Thursday, March 19, 1-2 pm, at Plainville Senior Center, 200 East St. Presenter Michael Peshka, RN, of Hartford HealthCare Pain Treatment Center, will discuss topics including pain, conditions and treatment, including the role of CBD. SIMSBURY – Stroke, caused by a blocked blood vessel or brain bleeding, can occur in people of every age. The free Dinner with the Doc, “Stroke: a Brain Attack,” on Thursday, March 19, will cover topics including signs, the effect on the brain and new innovations in recovery. NEW BRITAIN – Healthy eating is important at any age but becomes even more so as people reach midlife and beyond. Studies have suggested that as people grow older, eating a healthy diet may help to improve mental acuteness, boost energy levels and increase resistance to illness. The free Lunch and Learn program, “Eating for Healthy Aging,” will be held Thursday, March 26, noon-1 pm, at Arbor Rose at Jerome Home, 975 Corbin Ave. The event, which will examine the relationship between healthy eating and aging, will include a cooking demonstration. Presenters will include Maquita Sellers, exercise physiologist, of GoodLife Fitness. Sponsors include GoodLife Fitness and Arbor Rose at Jerome Home.

March 27: ‘Living with Heart Disease’

WALLINGFORD – Living with heart disease can be challenging and limit some of life’s activities. A free program on Friday, March 27, 10:30 to 11:45 am, at Wallingford Senior Center, 238 Washington St., will cover many topics including heart failure and coronary artery disease, the importance of conserving energy, and tips for living safely at home. Presenter will be David Santoro, OTR/L, adjunct professor, Quinnipiac University Occupational Therapy program, and Occupational Therapy master’s program students. Hartford HealthCare Senior Services is sponsoring.

March 30: Dementia Caregivers Support Group at Duncaster 

BLOOMFIELD – The dementia caregivers support group at Duncaster meets on the last Monday of each month (March 30), 10:30 am-noon, in the Hospitality Room at Duncaster, 30 Loeffler Road. Facilitators are Michelle Wyman, LSW, CDP, of Hartford HealthCare Center for Healthy Aging, and Sara Therion, MSW.
